The competition for prepaid mobile and sim only plans is heating up. In recent times, more and more providers have been entering the market and pushing hard for your business. Many are offering great value for money by increasing data limits and alternative add on services. One of the newest providers which launched in March 2016 is OVO Mobile. OVO Mobile is perfect for those who want a truly prepaid mobile plan that allows you to pay as you go. They use the Optus 3G and 4G network so you know the coverage is awesome.

Prepaid Mobile and Sim Only Plans

There are 5 OVO Mobile plans that are well separated by calls, text and data. Their prepaid mobile and sim only plans have a nice breakdown and would certainly cover any user in the market from your child’s first phone to a super heavy phone user.

Small $14.95 $500 standard calls and unlimited SMS/MMS 1.5 GB 30 days
Medium $24.95 Unlimited standard calls and SMS/MMS 2.0 GB 30 days

OVO Mobile Plans in Detail

The Mini: $9.95 per month
OVO Mobile Mini Plan
The Mini plan I believe is aimed at either parents looking for simple, cheap prepaid mobile phone plans for their children, or older Australia’s (Like my dad) who in reality virtually never use their phone. For $9.95 per month you get $200 worth of standard phone calls and unlimited SMS/MMS with 1.0GB worth of data. A great note for mums and dads is all OVO Mobile plans come with Family Zone. Family Zone is a cyber security app that enables you to have control over your child’s device. This allows you to keep them safe while online by giving you the ability to block certain content, limit downloads, restrict access to social media, games and more. It is honestly a terrific app for mums and dads concerned about their child’s online vulnerability.

Family Zone OVO Mobile Introduction Video

We are talking about prepaid mobiles and sim only plans, hence in some of the cheaper ones we still need to consider call fees. Assuming 5 minute calls (99 cents per minute + 40 cents flagfall) each call would cost $5.35.  So that gives you approximately 37 x 5 minute calls or 185 minutes of talk time in this plan.

The Small: $14.95 per month

OVO Mobile Small Plan
The small is for those users who feel an additional $5 dollars per month is worth an extra $300 worth of calls and 500 MB worth of data. In my opinion it probably is.

Now assuming 5 minute calls (99 cents per minute + 40 cents flagfall) each call would cost $5.35.  So that gives you approximately 93 x 5 minute calls or 465 minutes of talk time.

The Medium: $24.95 per month

Medium Prepaid Plan
This prepaid mobile plan was a great move by OVO Mobile. I say this as it’s the first on the list to provide unlimited calls and text. You are only limited by the data usage which sits at 2.0 GB per month. I can see this plan being quite popular for older Australians that love to chat with their family and friends but are not use users of social media, you tube, internet etc. For people that are heavy on talk and text but not so much on data this is simple put a perfect sim only plan for you. I really feel this is a perfectly established plan by OVO Mobile.

The Large: $34.95 per month

OVO Mobile Prepaid Large Plan
The Large plan is starting to compete with the large Telcos stronger offerings. For $34.95 a month you get unlimited calls and text with a huge 8 GB worth of data. I can see this plan being OVO Mobiles most popular as it’s the first that really fits well with most Australian users. In Australia the young ones, use heaps and heaps of data. For example I run Preezie.com.au so I am a super heavy mobile user. On average I use between 9 – 12GB per month, and I don’t feel many people out their could compete with me. It comes as no surprise to me that this plan won the “Money Magazines 2017 Best value mobile plan – high usage” award. This would be my pick for most heavy mobile phone users that are looking for prepaid mobile or sim only plans.

The Extra Large: $44.95 per month

OVO Mobile Extra Large Plan
This plan is perfect for people like me. I run an online business, I user my phone virtually non stop. Emails, you tube, updating the site, facebook, linkedin and even hot-spot. For less then $45 per month you get 12 GB worth of data and unlimited phone calls and text. Now I currently run with Optus and pay between $110 - $130 per month for unlimited text and calls but only 10 GB of data. Hence I feel this plan would be really well positioned to super heavy phone users who possibly just came off a plan and are still happy with their current phone. Example: James is 26 years old and lives on the internet. He has a Samsung Galaxy S5 which still performs great and just finished his 2 year contract with Telsta, this is the plan for you James.

Telstra Prepaid Mobile / Sim only Plans

As to be expected Telstra prepaid mobile plans will always cost the most. However they do typically have the best network, service and coverage. Virtually Telstra is a good example of you get what you pay for. Pay the highest prices and you shall receive the best overall experience. However definitely not for the budget conscious.

Vodafone Prepaid Mobile / Sim only Plans

Vodafones offers are reasonable value for money. If you look at there plans and compare them to the OVO Mobile plans they will look more expensive, and they are a little. However some of their plans offer international calls and texts includes. This is a huge feature for those who call overseas. For example if we the $50 vodafone prepaid plan and the OVO Mobile $34.95 prepaid plan the OVO gives you 500 MB more for $15 less. However the Vodafone $50 plan includes 90 mins of international calls, 1000 minutes of calls to Super 1000 countries and 50 international texts.

ALDI Prepaid Mobile / Sim only Plans

ALDI mobile plans are well priced, they are in general a little more expensive then the OVO Mobile however not much and can depend on the deal. Aldi Mobile prepaid plans also won the 2015 and 2016 most satisfied mobile prepaid award from Canstar and they also took out the Money Magazine Best Value prepaid mobile plan low usage PAYG award for 2015 and 2016. When comparing the L Aldi Plans vs the Ovo Medium plan Aldi comes out on top. Being only 5 cents more expensive but giving you an additional 250 MB of data per month.

Name Price Calls Data Duration
S $15 250 mins standard calls and unlimited SMS/MMS 0.5 GB 30 days
M $20 750 mins standard calls and unlimited SMS/MMS 1.5 GB 30 days
L $25 Unlimited standard calls and SMS/MMS 2.25 GB 30 days
XL $35 Unlimited standard calls and SMS/MMS 6.0 GB 30 days
XXL $45 Unlimited standard calls and SMS/MMS 8.0 GB 30 days

Boost Prepaid Mobile / Sim only Plans

Boost mobile plans are extremely similar to OVO Mobile. They offer 4 different plans ranging from 1 GB to 11 GB. However the 7GB and above plans require a proportion of the data to be used during the weekend which doesn’t give you the same flexibility. Hence comparing the 2 different options OVO Mobile still seems more attractive.

Name Price Calls Data Duration
N/A $10 Unlimited standard calls and SMS/MMS 1.0 GB 7 days
N/A $30 Unlimited standard calls and SMS/MMS 7.0 GB 28 days
N/A $40 Unlimited standard calls and SMS/MMS 9.0 GB 28 days
N/A $50 Unlimited standard calls and SMS/MMS 11.0 GB 28 days

Kogan Prepaid Mobile / Sim only Plans

The Kogan prepaid mobile plans are overall more expensive then OVO Mobile. However the smaller $16.90 plan is very attractive for those who don’t use much data however send my texts and lots of calls.

Name Price Calls Data Duration
Small $16.90 Unlimited standard calls and SMS/MMS 1.0 GB 30 days
Medium $29.90 Unlimited standard calls and SMS/MMS 3.0 GB 30 days
Large $36.90 Unlimited standard calls and SMS/MMS 8.0 GB 30 days
Extra Large $49.90 Unlimited standard calls and SMS/MMS 12.0 GB 30 days

Amaysim Prepaid Mobile / Sim only Plans

The Amaysim is another newer service to Australia. Their $24.90 offer can compare almost exactly to the OVO Mobile $24.90 plan however you get an additional 500 MB to use of data. Amaysim also use the Optus 4G network therefore the service and coverage will be 2nd to only Telstra. Overall they have some great offers, however are still a little more expensive then OVO Mobile.

Name Price Calls Data Duration
N/A $24.90 Unlimited standard calls and SMS/MMS 1.5 GB 28 days
N/A $29.90 Unlimited standard calls and SMS/MMS 3.0 GB 28 days
N/A $39.90 Unlimited standard calls and SMS/MMS 7.0 GB 28 days
N/A $49.90 Unlimited standard calls and SMS/MMS 9.0 GB 28 days

Virgin Prepaid Mobile / Sim only Plans

The Virgin plans are a little strange, they are still using an older style of plan structure where they offer you dollars of call credits rather then simply offering you unlimited calls. However to put it in context a Virgin Mobile prepaid call would cost you 90 cents per minute + a 40 cents flagfall.  So a 5 minute call would cost $4.90. Therefore their $29 plan would give you 91, 5 minute calls. That’s 3 a day. In my opinion this really doesn’t even come close to comparing with the OVO Mobile Medium plan which costs $24.95 and gives you unlimited calls.

Name Price Calls Data Duration
N/A $19 $100 worth of standard calls and SMS/MMS 0.5 GB 28 days
N/A $29 $450 worth of standard calls and SMS/MMS 2.0 GB 28 days
N/A $49 $900 worth of standard calls and SMS/MMS 5.0 GB 28 days
N/A $79 $1500 worth of standard calls and SMS/MMS 8.0 GB 28 days
N/A $99 $1800 worth of standard calls and SMS/MMS 10.0 GB 28 days

The Verdict on OVO Mobile Prepaid and Sim only Plans

Compare Prepaid and Sim Only plans to OVO Mobile

When I first heard about OVO Mobile and their prepaid plans I honestly thought this is another Telco setting up shop in Australia to simply confuse us and take our money. However looking at the details OVO Mobile seems to offer the best overall package when looking at sim only prepaid plans. Their offers are typically cheaper for what you get, they also offer some live streaming for sports and they offer the Family Zone App for free. Not only that, they use the Optus 4G network which is typically extremely reliable and fast. Overall after conducting all our research OVO Mobile seems to be the best choice when looking at prepaid sim only plans. It would certainly be my choice and I just sent 6 hours researching.
